Preparation
Visa
To go to China you will need a visa. If you are planning to come to the Centre of Beijing International Shaolin Culture, please apply for your visa at your nearest embassy. The Centre has been authorized so that students can apply for a Tourist visa (duration options: 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months), or L-type visa (6 months). After you have arrived here your visa can be extended easily (1 – 2 years) and we will help you with that process. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Insurance
We recommend that you purchase medical insurance which covers injuries and illness that may occur during your stay in China. The Centre of Beijing International Shaolin Culture assumes no responsibility for injuries occurring before, during or after training, while under the centre's supervision.
Application Fee
Please make sure to transfer the application fee prior to your arrival so that your place at the centre is guaranteed. Please note that the application fee of $150 is non-refundable.
Payment
To pay your tution and any extra charges (travel, extra course etc), the easiest method is by cash after your arrival either in USD, RMB or GBP. You can also transfer your fees by bank or any West Union branch. For other methods of payment, please click here.
Age Restrictions
If you are under 18 years old, your parents/guardian's will need to confirm that you can attend. Students who are younger than 13 years must be accompanied by an adult. Any student who cannot travel alone will need an escort. There is no maximum age.
Health
There are no required vaccinations for entering China except for the Yellow Fever vaccination if you are arriving from an infected area. It is best to consult a travel clinic in advance of leaving if you wish to have any other vaccinations such as the Hepatitis A vaccine. In China, local clinics and hospitals are well equipped and have many western, Chinese and combination medicines. In a medical bag, it is convenient to have things like sunscreen, insect repellant, band aids, some cream or ointment for cuts and bruises, something for an upset stomach or nausea, any prescription or allergy medicine and multi-vitamins if taken.
Personal Preparation
The best thing to prepare yourself is to relax your mind and body. Some additional physical exercises such as running (1 or 2 miles a day or so), cycling, swimming, push-up, pull-ups and sit-ups can also help to prepare you, as well as a proper diet. In fact any type of sports that helps build muscle strength and stamina is helpful.
What to bring
This is not a complete list but it might help you when packing your suitcase. For training in summer it is good to have loose trousers or shorts and a couple of T-shirts with you. For winter some additional warm sweaters for training and free time, a warm jacket as well as thermal underwear or a track suit are recommended. It will be useful to have a pair of running shoes for jogging and stamina training. For regular training, students usually wear a type of thin-sole trainers that can be bought easily after arriving. Furthermore, you should bring basic and personal medical equipment with you and other special items you may need from your home. It is also advisable to bring a power adapter if you want to bring any type of electrical equipment from your home country such as a laptop. British-Chinese Adapters can be bought easily here and are cheap too. You may also like to bring books to read or to learn Chinese. Don't forget that most of the stuff you will need can also be bought in the nearest town or the centre's shop. When you pack your suitcase, keep in mind that this is an International Kung Fu training centre and not a holiday camp or a five star hotel. Its purpose is to train your whole being, so pack accordingly.
Money and banking
ATM's at the Bank of China can be used to take out money using a card. Cash can also be sent from a foreign country through Western Union. Traveler's cheques can be cashed at a bank such as the Bank of China and but may take a little while to process. There are lots banks in Baoding and Beijing, such as Lloyds TSB, NatWest, HSBC etc.
Food and accommodation is included in costs for the centre, so it is not necessary to spend lots of extra money whilst training. Additional money however will be used on snacks, water, travel and shopping. Students are likely to find that food and many other things are much cheaper to buy in China than in their home country.
